The Sharples Group team have a genuine desire and passion for giving back to the community and our Corporate and Social Responsibility (CSR) is taken very seriously. This theme runs throughout the business and each year we undertake many varied and ambitious charitable adventures.
Here a few of the challenges and some of the charities and community projects we get involved in.
Rowing the Atlantic for Bolton Lads & Girls Club!
This is the most ambitious and perhaps audacious challenge ever undertaken and involved the Sharples Group Managing Director Mark Brocklehurst rowing a 29ft boat across the Atlantic Ocean in the Talisker Whisky Atlantic Challenge.
Mark, well known for his adventurous challenges, has completed a John O’Groats to Lands End Bike Ride and numerous Triathlons including the ultimate Iron Man (2.4m swim, 112 mile bike ride & 26 mile marathon run) but even for him this event dubbed the toughest race on earth pushed him to the limit.
Mark, a board director at the youth charity Bolton Lads & Girls Club, came up with the idea to help plug a shortage in the club’s finances which meant that some of the most vulnerable and disadvantaged 8-12 year old children in the town were not being given the help they desperately needed.
The race began on December 4th 2013, having been delayed by two days due to bad weather, and Mark and his three crewmates finally made land 59 days, 18 hours and 9 seconds later!
Speaking about the challenge Mark said, “This journey at sea has been extreme with many more lows than highs but ultimately this one will be the pinnacle of my nautical career. It will also go a long way to helping a great cause and it’s that high that will no doubt stay with me for life.”
